Karl Pavlovich Briullov (in rusa Карл Павлович Брюллов), supranumit Marele Karl (12 decembrie 1799 – 11 iunie 1852) a fost un pictor rus. E considerat o figura cheie  in tranzitia de la neoclasicismul la  romantismul rus.Nascut in Saint Petersburg din parinti francezi, Carlo Brulleau (cum se scria numele lui pana in 1822) s-a simtit atras de Italia inca de la o varsta frageda.In ciuda educatiei sale la Academia Imperiala de Arte (1809–1821), Briullov nu a imbratisat in totalitate niciodata, stilul clasic predat de profesorii sai si promovat de fratele sau, Alexander Briullov. Dupa ce s-a distins ca student promitator si imaginativ si dupa ce si-a terminat studiile, artistul a plecat din Rusia la Roma unde a lucrat pana in 1835 ca portretist si pictor de compozitie, insa a devenit faimos dupa ce a inceput sa picteze subiecte istorice.
Cea mai cunoscuta lucrare a sa, 'The Last Day of Pompeii' (1830–1833) este o vasta compositie comparata de Pushkin and Gogol cu cele mai bune lucrari ale lui Rubens si Van Dyck. Lucrarea a creat senzatie in Italia si l-a stabilit pe  Briullov ca cel mai bun pictor al acelei perioade. Dupa ce si-a terminat lucrarile, artistul s-a reintors triumfaal in Rusia unde si-a facut multi prieteni printre aristocrati si elita intelectuala si a obtinut un post la Academia Imperiala de Arte.
In perioada de la academie  (1836–1848) a dezvoltat un stil portretistic care combina simplicitatea neoclasica cu tendinta romantica, iar inclinatia sa spre  realism a fost satisfacuta de un nivel uluitorde patrundere psihologica. Pe cand lucra la plafonul Catedralei St Isaac, sanatatea lui s-a inrautatit brusc. Urmand sfatul doctorilor sai, Briullov a plecat din Rusia la Madeira in 1849 si si-a petrecut ultimii trei ani de viata in Italia.A murit in Rome si a fost inmormantat la the Cimitero degli Inglesi.
