Jan Havickszoon Steen (? 1626 –  3 februarie 1679) a fost un pictor olandez de compozitie din secolul al XVII-lea, perioada cunoscuta ca Dutch Golden Age. Introspectia psihologica, simtul umorului si abundenta culorilor sunt caracteristicile stilului sau.
Steen s-a nascut in Leiden, unde familia sa catolica erau niste berari prosperi care aveau de  doua generatii taverna  The Red Halbert. Ca si faimosul sau contemporan, Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Steen a urmat cursurile scolii Latine  si a devenit student in Leiden. A primit notiunile de pictura de la Nicolaes Knupfer (1603–1660), un pictor german de scene istorice si figurative  din Utrecht. Influentele lui Knupfer se pot observa in compozitiile si culorile lui Steen. Alte surse de inspiratie au fost Adriaen van Ostade si Isaac van Ostade, pictori de scene rurale care au trait in Haarlem.
In 1648 Jan Steen si Gabriel Metsu au fondat in Leiden o breasla a  pictorilor,   Saint Luke. Curand dupa aceea el a devenit asistentul renumitului pictor Jan van Goyen si s-a mutat in casa lui de pe Bierkade in Haga. Pe 3 octombrie 1649 s-a casatorit cu Margriet, fiica lui van Goyen, cu care a avut opt copii. Steen a lucrat cu socrul sau pana in 1654, cand s-a mutat la Delft, unde a administrat beraria De Roscam (The Curry Comb) (sau De Slang (The Snake)) fara prea mare suces. Dupa explozia din Delft din 1654, piata de arta a cazut, dar nu si faimoasa pictura a lui  Steen, “A Burgomaster of Delft and his daughter“.
Steen a fost un pictor prolific, producand aproximativ 800 de picturi din care aproximativ 350 au mai ramas, opera lui fiind o sursa de inspiratie pentru multi pictori.
