Edwin Lord Weeks - Tangiers

Edwin Lord Weeks (Boston, Massachusetts 1849 - Paris, France, 1903) a fost un pictor american care s-a nascut langa Boston si si-a facut studiile in Boston si la scoala publica Newton, cu toate ca si-a petrecut o mare parte din viata in afara Statelor Unite. Si-a inceput cariera artistica in 1869 cu o schita a unei  excursii la Florida, apoi in Surinam si alte destinatii din America de Sud. Reintors la Massachusetts, a pictat pentru o scurta perioada peisaje ssi subiecte istorice in Boston. A plecat la Paris unde a studiat cu Leon Bonnat, precum si cu Jean-Leon Gerome la Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Weeks, ca si Gerome, era interesat de subiecte Orientale si ca student a calatorit in Africa de Nord, Spania si Orientul Mijlociu. In 1872 s-a reintors in Massachusetts, s-a casatorit cu verisoara lui, Frances Rollins Hale si si-a deschis un studio. Dupa aproape un an, proaspatul cuplu s-a alaturat lui Robert Gavin, un pictor scotian, intro calatorie pe  Mediterana si and Maroc. Restul anilor 1870 i-a petrecut acolo, reintorcandu-se la Boston doar ocazional pentru a expune si sa lucreze ca ilustrator. In anii 1880, picturile lui au devenit mai tehnice si detaliate, ca in "The Gate at the Fortress of Agra". O teorie a acestei schimbari este ca Weeks, care era si fotograf, a considerat ca e mai convenabil sa captureze o scena pe film in timpul calatoriilor si sa o picteze apoi dupa fotografie cand ii permitea timpul.
Paris a fost punctul de pornire in anii 1880, acolo a expus picturile lui cu  India la Salonul din 1884, unde a primit aprecieri pozitive si a capatat recunoastere nationala. A continuat sa faca calatorii pentru pictura in Persia, Turcia si India. In afara de pictor, fotograf si ilustrator, Weeks a fost si scriitor.
